The Wireshark Foundation today announced an expanded Board of Directors and a renewed mission focused on ensuring Wireshark remains a vibrant, sustainable, innovative, and community-driven open-source project for decades to come. This leadership transition strengthens the Foundation’s commitment to building and maintaining the world’s leading open-source network protocol analyzer.
“The Wireshark project has always been about more than software,” said Gerald Combs, Wireshark Founder and CTO of the Wireshark Foundation. “It is a global community and an extraordinary body of shared knowledge. Our responsibility now is not simply to maintain what has been built, but to create the conditions for the next generation of contributors, users, and innovations to thrive.”
Together, the Board will provide strategic oversight for the Foundation, strengthen its relationship with the Wireshark community, and widen the options and priorities for how the project is funded, building toward a sustainable, diversified base of support that carries Wireshark’s mission forward. This transition marks a shift in operations and in how Wireshark’s long history, and the work still ahead, are shared with the community.

“The expanded Board represents an important step forward for the Foundation,” said Dr. Kelley Misata, Chair of the Wireshark Foundation Board of Directors. “Wireshark has been trusted by network professionals for more than 25 years. This Board’s job is to make sure that trust is matched with the governance, judgment, and long-term thinking the project deserves. Every person here brings something we didn’t have before, and that’s what lets us move from supporting Wireshark’s present to actively shaping its future.”
Wireshark helps make network analysis accessible to everyone - from students and researchers to network engineers, security professionals, developers, and organizations around the world. As networks become increasingly complex and interconnected with cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies, the Foundation believes the time is right to broaden its focus and help lead the next generation of innovation.
