to add to my previous posting:

"tcpdump -i en0" works
"tcpdump -i en1" works
"tcpdump" does not work. it says it defaults to en0 but wlan is gone....

Apple bugreport #4499345

my ethereal was using libpcap 0.9.4.

Since I switched from MacOS X on Power PC (a PowerBook G4) to MacOS X
on intel (a MacBook Pro) I'm facing a weird behaviour of Ethereal
0.10.14. Even though Ethereal has been compiled on the machine for
its CPU and works well on the ethernet interface, using it on the
WLAN card of the MacBook Pro makes it loose its connectivity.

Does the same thing happen if you run tcpdump on it?

Yes and no. This actually gives an interesting hint.

My WLAN interface is "en1"
My wired gigabit interface is "en0".

When I run tcpdump without any argument, it tries to capture on en0 but my wlan is lost. When I try to capture using "tcpdump -i en1" however, I see all my packets and my wlan connection is NOT lost.

In other words, it works as long as the unused interface "en0" is not tampered with. Ethereal should be able to do that too. Usually loosing the wlan connection happens already when you go into preferences and save them etc.

If so, then, if you have an ADC account, I'd suggest filing a bug on this. Give all details of your network (note that it uses WEP, indicate whether it's 802.11b or 802.11g), and give all details of the tcpdump command you
ran (interface you captured on, indication of whether you turned
promiscuous mode off or not, etc.).

Already done.
