Reading further reveals what Chris mentioned about PPP vs. PPP over HDLC. I
thought that it was always based on HDLC headers, but as RFC 1661 (July 1994)
states, "In environments where bandwidth is at a premium, the encapsulation and
framing may be shortened to 2 or 4 octets." -- so the question is, when is PPP
used *without* the HDLC header?
