You *can* capture on that MS loopback adapter (this is *not* the
127.0.0.1 interface), but the whole thing is of limited use in windows.

Now it's much clearer, thanks. As I understand, I may well have two sockets communicating through port 9877 on the same network interface that Ethereal (because of MS Windows limitations) will never catch the packets going through them. So, two machines seems to be the only option...
