Also, the problem I am having is that I am seeing a lot of network traffic but only that coming and going on my laptop. I am not able to see any traffic to and from my desktop. I am using an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG integrated wireless card on my laptop (which is running linux).

Well, at least it's not Windows (which, if somebody wants to capture, with Ethereal - or any other libpcap/WinPcap-based application - wireless traffic other than traffic to and from the machine, is definitely the Wrong Choice).

What driver are you using?

A quick look at the source to Intel's Linux driver doesn't show any instance of the string "promisc" (case-insensitive), so the driver might not support promiscuous mode. Current versions *do* appear to support monitor mode, so you might be able to capture in monitor mode; however, I don't know whether, if the adapter is in monitor mode, it can also associate with a network and send traffic on and receive traffic from the network.
