I think we have some build issues? Applying the 'debugging' patch fixed the
problem, and now I can't reproduce even after reverting the debugging patch.

Given that I was still able to reproduce after having done a maintainer-clean
to fix the other build issue I'd been having, this is very odd.

For reference, the output with the patch was:
Adding pipe to main loop: fd=7
Removing pipe from main loop
Reading from sync pipe: fd=7
Got indicator 'F' from sync pipe
Adding pipe back to main loop
Removing pipe from main loop
Reading from sync pipe: fd=7
Got indicator 'P' from sync pipe
Adding pipe back to main loop
Removing pipe from main loop
Reading from sync pipe: fd=7
Got indicator 'P' from sync pipe
Adding pipe back to main loop
Removing pipe from main loop
Reading from sync pipe: fd=7
Got indicator 'D' from sync pipe
Adding pipe back to main loop
Removing pipe from main loop
Reading from sync pipe: fd=7
Got 0 from sync pipe, waiting for child to exit
Child process exited
NOT adding pipe back to main loop
