I am not sure if you really have to install all those packages from
source. For most Linux distributions (im not sure about Fedora) it
should be sufficient to install the binary packages and the
development packages. For example, if you have following debian
packages (note the -dev package) on a debian system, ethereal should
work fine:

libgtk2.0-0      2.4.14-2 The GTK+ graphical user interface library
libgtk2.0-bin    2.4.14-2 The programs for the GTK+ graphical user interface library
libgtk2.0-common 2.4.14-2 Common files for the GTK+ graphical user interface library
libgtk2.0-dev    2.4.14-2 Development files for the GTK+ library

I guess that Fedora has -dev packages as well, but I'm not sure.
