It's not really your job at that point - if somebody does screw up that value,
there are a half-dozen other core parts of the dissection engine that will
likely crash or throw an exception long before it gets to your code.
Anyways, I've committed the final patch (with a few of the assertions removed)
in r47694. Thanks for all your work, and thanks for being patient through all
the back-and-forth as we got some of the details sorted.
