As Bill mentioned, proper GTK3 work is too much churn for the 1.8 stable branch
at this point. If you would like to work on integrating your patch into trunk
we'll probably be making a new stable release sometime this summer, and it can
certainly be included there.
And, for what it's worth, trunk is usually pretty stable anyways. I wouldn't
want to rely on it for an enterprise deployment, but we're pretty careful about
what gets checked in, and the fuzz-bot catches regressions quickly.
