--- Comment #3 from Guy Harris <guy@xxxxxxxxxxxx> 2008-11-08 23:27:04 PDT ---
That message is printed because, well, wireshark-bin requires version 3.0.0 or
later, but libfontconfig.1.dylib provides version 1.0.0.

As bug 3042 states, the download page doesn't make it clear enough that the
download available from wireshark.org is 10.5-only; until the OS X-native
version of GTK+ is sufficiently stable for us to use as the basis of the
standard OS X distribution, there will probably never be a distribution that
runs on both 10.4 and 10.5, given that the versions of libfontconfig coming
with 10.4 and 10.5 are, as I remember, source-incompatible and
binary-incompatible, so a single binary cannot be made to work on both OSes.

At some point, we'll probably go to the native OS X version of GTK+, which
*might* allow us to build a version of Wireshark that runs on 10.4 or 10.5 (no
guarantees, however); I'll leave this bug open for that or for building
separate 10.4 and 10.5 packages. Until then, users who want a version of
Wireshark for 10.4 - or, I think, versions of 10.5 prior to 10.5.5, as 10.5.5
came with a version of libfontconfig that, for better or worse, has a
"compatibility version" number that marks it as incompatible with the
10.5-through-10.5.4 version, even though they're binary-comaptible - will have
to build it from source themselves, or find binary versions from elsewhere.
