On the website (http://www.ethereal.com/introduction.html#license) it says
that the license is GPL. There is no
notice of this within the distribution itself – this needs to be included
at some point (is someone listening, to include the GNU GPL’s
LICENSE file?).
The text of the GNU GPL (it doesn’t
specify the version) states that you can distribute binaries of the program, as
long as you distribute the source code OR provide a place where the source code
can be downloaded. If you don’t
distribute the binary (just use it internally), you don’t have to
distribute the source code.

Hello,
I am a course developer with Nortel Networks in
Raleigh, North Carolina. Nortel Networks sponsors and owns an
educational program called NetKnowledge. We have approximately 120
participating institutions in NetKnowledge. The program is designed to
teach highschool studenta and community college students about networking
principles and practices. In our "Internetworking Fundamentals"
course we have a section of exercises that requires the use of a sniffer.
Nortel Networks is interested in using Ethereal as the sniffer to be used
within the lab exercises in this course.
I need to know from Ethereal what kind of legal
agreement is required so that we can use and reference Ethereal within our
courseware. If there is a form that needs to be filled out by Nortel's
legal departement, I would be interested in obtaining a copy of the
form.
