Sorry if this is a known feature.
Ethereal-0.9.14 under Linux (MDK9.1):

The standard build (GTK1) allows multiple packets to be highlighted 
using the middle mouse button.

When built for GTK2 this no longer works. Nor do ctrl or shift 
modifiers, right click, or anything else I tried.
