When you're viewing a change there should be a "Preferences" link in the
menu at the top of the page that lets you change the whitespace
behavior. I'm not sure if there is a way to set the defaults globally.
Also, if you've managed to change "Settings → Preferences → Change View"
to "New Screen" the menu doesn't appear.
