Wireshark-bugs: [Wireshark-bugs] [Bug 9311] Support for writing gzip-compressed files on the fly

Date: Wed, 11 Dec 2013 11:38:54 +0000

There was a patch from a while back[1]. The API has greatly changed, so that
patch does not work anymore.

At least dumpcap uses pcapio.c routines for writing files, which uses stdio
(fwrite) using a centralized method. The only other user of pcapio is text2cap.

If libpcap and libpcapng (from pcapio.c) is dropped, and wiretap is used
instead, then a lot of other capture formats and compression gets supported
automagically. Note the security risks... dumpcap should be a small program
because it often has file capabilities.
