Thanks for commenting. I'll take a look at the framework, and cheers for
reminding me about checkAPI.
I see your point about not using globals if it can be helped. I wished to avoid
changing signatures on existing routines, as well as re-use as much existing as
I could, but I could of course create a few new routines of my own to handle
these cases, which would allow me to pass the information around in parameters
instead.

It was my plan to "port" the changes to the ASN1 framework. I merely wished to
get it sanity-checked first. I can certainly make sure I do it from an SVN base
and get both versions in, once I have something in a state worth sending up the
chain. At that time, should I create a new bug for patches, btw? I have sort of
hijacked Wills bug here, since the topic fit, but I am unsure about what the
procedure is.
