He's presumably doing on a Mac, in which case, if it's run from the GUI, the
standard output and error get logged to a log viewable by the Console
application.
(It used to be done, as I remember, by having GUI-launched apps have
/dev/console as the standard output and error, with a program redirecting
/dev/console to a pseudo-tty with TIOCCONS and reading from the pseudo-tty
master side and writing to a file; now I think it's done by having GUI-launched
apps have a pipe to launchd as the standard output and error and having launchd
log that stuff through Apple System Log, a/k/a "syslog on steroids".)
