What version of Tethereal are you using?  (What does "tethereal -v" print?)

None of the recent releases appear to have that assertion on line 1487 of the epan/proto.c source file, so you might be using an old release.

That message means there's a bug in Ethereal. That bug might have been fixed in a later release.

If you're running a release earlier than 0.10.14, try installing 0.10.14 (unless you're running Windows, as you might have a problem if your system is configured with Spanish as its main language and the Spanish translation of the names for the "Directories and Settings", or whatever it's called, or "Application Data" have accented letters in them; in that case, if you're running a release earlier than 0.10.13, try 0.10.13).
