What I would suggest is to do something similar to what, e.g., 
Office 2003 and Adobe Acrobat (not Adobe Reader) do. They open 
a closeable pane along the right border, with some tasks you 
are likely to perform when starting the application, e.g., New, 
Search, Help, a list of recently used files and so on. And it 
should of course be configurable if you want this pane at startup.
