What I meant was, that even if I do not check the "Update list of 
packets in real time" option when I do a capture, I would still
expect it to show the (empty) packet panes.

Consider this case:
1) Perform a capture or read a stored capture file.
2) You see the packet panes.
3) You want to do a new capture.
4) You start the capture without checking "Update list of packets 
   in real time".
5) The capture starts, and all of a sudden the Welcome pane
   is shown again, but you cannot do anything with it...
