| the RTL. You'd have a .exe with its own RTL inside the binary; and
it would
| be using numerous DLLs which would be sharing the RTL provided by
| MSVCRT.DLL.

| Unfortunately, as I discovered recently, even if you try to compile
ethereal
| against the DLL flavor of the RTL, the latest tools (VS.NET 2003
and, I'm
| sure, the command line tools), you still have an equivalent problem.
That's
| because the latest tools require "MSVCRT7.DLL", which is the
redistributable
| C RTL that MS now wants you to ship with your apps and install in
the app's
| "bin" directory. In that case, you'd have a .exe using MSVCRT7.DLL's
RTL and
| all of the 3rd party DLLs using MSVCRT.DLL's RTL. Even if it worked
a lot of
| the time, I'd expect numerous confounding edge cases that wouldn't
be worth
| trying to support.

| Best I can tell, there are only a few correct solutions:
|
| 1) Recompile all of the 3rd party libraries w/ the new tools,
building them
| as DLLs that require MSVCRT7.DLL. Then build ethereal the same way.
This
| keeps things closest to how they are now (pretty much all 3rd party
| libraries as DLLs). The problem could occur again if/when the
"latest" C RTL
| is called MSVCRT8.DLL (or some such). To work around that, you'd
have to
| have different builds of the 3rd party DLLs for each flavor of the C
RTL DLL
| that should be supported.

| 2) Recompile all of the 3rd party libraries w/ the new tools as
static
| libraries that use the static C RTL. Build ethereal with those
static
| libraries and the static C RTL. Deal with real large .exe's. This is
the
| most future-proof, as there's no concern about C RTL issues except
when
| dealing with the expected symbols at link time. Assuming the link
succeeds
| (and something ridiculous hasn't happened like a change in calling
| conventions), the binary will work.

| 3) Stick w/ MSVC6 ad infinitum. Even that has its problems,
apparently, as
| I'll likely have to get into in a near-future message.

| 4) Continue down the path of some other threads and make the cygwin
build of
| ethereal the first-class windows citizen. That probably has its
issues, too.
