Hi,

This has got to be the worst situation I have ever seen. The current CVS 
will not build for me under FreeBSD or RH9.0. Under FreeBSD I have been 
getting a bunch of problems that have caused me to upgrade autoconf and 
automake, which caused lots of problems.

Under RH9.0, configure is determining that -lelf is required but there 
seems to be no such library on my system.

I think we need some discussion around how we make such radical changes in 
future.
