Hi,

Recently faced an issue related to "Adapter for Generic Dialup and VPN Capture"
while using Wireshark 1.2.4/1.2.5 with WINPCAP 4.1.1 on Windows XP Professional SP3.

The hardware is a HP 'EliteBook 6930p', if that matters.

The 'story' is as follows---

I received the laptops (3 of them) fresh, with just Windows installed. I downloaded
and installed Wireshark 1.2.4 on them.

THE PROBLEM -- On running Wireshark, noted that they did not show
the "Adapter for Generic Dialup and VPN Capture" in the Interface List
(other interfaces -- Ethernet & Wifi, showed up fine)

THE INCIDENT/WORK-AROUND -- On one of the laptops, I did the following--

1. Uninstalled Wireshark 1.2.4, installed Wireshark 1.2.5 -- PROBLEM REMAINS, dialup
adapter still not showing in Interface List.

2. Uninstalled the (bundled) WINPCAP 4.1.1, downloaded the WINPCAP 4.1.1 installer from
winpcap.org and installed it -- PROBLEM REMAINS, dialup adapter still not showing.

3. Uninstalled WINPCAP 4.1.1, downloaded the WINPCAP 3.1 installer from
winpcap.org and installed it -- PROBLEM SOLVED, dialup adapter is now showing up.

4. Uninstalled WINPCAP 3.1, installed WINPCAP 4.1.1 (installer from winpcap.org), and
surprise! PROBLEM STAYS SOLVED -- the dialup adapter continues to show up!

I was so surprised by this, that I verified this on the other 2 laptops, and the
exact same thing happened there.

Cheers...

Avijit
