Under Windows, wireless adapters don't work very well (except maybe, to a limited degree, on Vista, if the driver is a native 802.11 driver, and even that doesn't give you monitor mode).

Under Linux, you'd want a system with a 2.6.18 or greater kernel, with the mac80211 wireless stack:

says of the iwlwifi driver for those adapters that it's been in the mainstream kernel since 2.6.24.

Under OpenBSD, you'd need a version of the OS with the iwn driver. NetBSD appears to have picked up that driver this month, but that probably means it's only in -current. It appears it's being ported to FreeBSD as well:
