The problem is finally solved: I was not careful
enough when checking the
registry. Before, I skimmed over links to that old
server as negligible which
were file associations. But indeed, windows explorer
is checking those every
time you try to access or look at a file or folder and
thus it is checking for
that server and waiting till a timeout occurs.
Correcting those links solved the
problem.
Now a lot of people have a much nicer user experience
again...
