FWIW you can pass the --enable-option-checking=fatal option to ./configure to make it fail when it doesn't recognize an option.

Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be a way for us to enable that behavior by default or to change when that warning message comes out (i.e., closer to where you'll see it).
