Wireshark-dev: Re: [Wireshark-dev] Help needed regarding plugin/.so file

In the /usr/local/lib/wireshark/plugins/1.4.0/ folder, there is an additional .la file along with .so for every plugin I can see, what is this .la file and do I need it for my plugin also?

One more thing, does it matter that the .so file of mine should be placed in the same machine (32 or 64bit) in which it was compiled?

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. Do the plugins have backward compatibility? I mean I’ve version-1.10.3 rpm with me but the plugin was compiled with 1.4.0. So, how do I use it now?

Hi,

you have 99.99% chance it will not work as the backward compatibility of APIs are not maintained between major releases. The only solution is to recompile the plugin against 1.10.X branch (and fix any error that will pop).

Or you downgrade to 1.4.0 release.

Pascal.

I think SO is a compiled Linux plugin, which needs to be added under wireshark’s plugins directory (you should have something like: /usr/local/lib/wireshark/plugins/1.4.0/)

Hello,

Somebody has given me a plugin (.so file ) and he is saying that he has compiled it with wireshark version 1.4.0. Now my problem is I don’t know what to do with this file? Where should I add this file in the code? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
