I just added the following to the bug:

My preferred solution would be to keep the old protocol as version 1,
add the new protocol as version 2 into the same dissector and add a
preference to select which  version to use (with a default of 2). It
doesn't have to be 1 or 2 of course.

We are stuck with technology when what we really want is just stuff that
works. Some say that should read Microsoft instead of technology.
