Hi folks,

Attached is a set of patches that seems to do the trick.

It still needs work because I have not tested the code on Windows
since I do not have a Windows build environment at home as yet, and I
am pretty sure I was not careful enough to ensure that the Windows
code is functional.

It would be useful if people could review them ...
