The original code (from Debian package) complies and runs as expected.

My code fails somewhere below register_all_protocols_func(cb, client_data) in proto.c.

Does "custom build" mean "building from the standard source with no modifications" or "building from modified source"?

If it's "building from modified source", does this occur if you try the same build, with the same options, from standard source?
