I can't verify that Bill's changes are compatible with *all* combinations, but I can verify that I encountered no problems with build 35755 using Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition SP1.  That was with starting with a "nmake -f Makefile.nmake distclean" so I think it's a fair test.
