One more small suggestion:  Should the text entry box for the display filter also have a label beside it, something like, "Filter:" that is also shown whenever the custom column is selected and hidden like the text entry box when it's not?  That way, it's a little more obvious as to what that text entry box is for.

Sorting custom columns according to field type fixed in revision 24452.
