Hi List!

Some people reported much slower initial loading of WS 0.99.4 on Windows compared to previous versions.

It seems that it stays in the "Init Dissectors" text on the splash screen for about 13 seconds!

Name resolutions was completely switched off, so this shouldn't be the problem.

As I cannot confirm this on my developer machine, anyone else seeing this or have a clue what's the cause?

On my laptop (Pentium III 1 GHz, Windows 2k) it was *30* seconds when I tried 0.99.4. The CPU was pegged during this time so I don't think it's DNS.

I had thought it might be that extra initialization checking discussed earlier, but unfortunately it doesn't happen for me on my (Linux) development machine (there startup is basically instantaneous), so I doubt it's that.

If you want to build a Windows debug version (doing printf()s with a time stamp before and after each dissector registration?), I could try it out and report back. (Given all the questions on the list about difficulties getting a Windows compile working, I doubt I'd ever succeed!)
