I got lost in the weeds taking into consideration Michael's remark from Comment
#8. I was hoping an elegant solution would become apparent but alas it did
not. I haven't completely abandoned hope, but I opted to take a time-out and
put my efforts towards other issues where I'm more likely to have some modest
success.
