Do you happen to have a Windows SMB server available and, if so, what happens
if the pcap file is stored on the Windows server rather than the UN*X+Samba
server?

And could you capture the network traffic between your machine and the server,
in both cases, using Wireshark, while another instance of Wireshark is trying
to open the file, and attach those capture files?
