Hmmm, I doubt (admittedly without experimenting) that the problem is that
ds_tvb is NULL.  I suspect it's simply we're hitting the new condition more
often than was assumed.

I suspect the right answer may be that it does not make sense to actually set
the length on a faked item--what's the point?

I have a patch which works well: it's significantly faster than current trunk
and it doesn't show the problem described in this bug.  Let me see if I can do
some Gerrit magic and upload a working patch dependent on reverting change
3340.
