I was able to reproduce this problem on Ubuntu 12.04 by editing the "recent"
and "recent_common" files and putting a CR at the end of every line, so
presumably it didn't show up on Linux for some mysterious reason - perhaps the
CRs got removed somehow, e.g. because the unzip code used on Linux recognized
text files and fixed the line endings but the unzip code used on OS X didn't
(different unzip code, perhaps).
So this is a generic UN*X problem. (I'd mark the platform as "UN*X", but
that's not an option.)
