1.8.x never touched CFLAGS_FOR_BUILD so there's nothing to fix for that branch.
Agreed, the proper fix is to check them for both compilers, quick fix for
1.10.x would be to only affect CFLAGS_FOR_BUILD only if it's the same compiler
(not cross compiling) as you said.
