Incremental progress:
Fixed in r50734 and back-ported to trunk-1.10 for 1.10.1. Leaving this open
for the trunk-1.8 port and also for all the uninitialized-memory warnings
coming out of Valgrind. (I probably won't have time to work on this for a
while: I probably need to--with what little free time I'll have in the next few
days--sort out the issues with bug 8908 before 1.10.1 ships.)
