I'm not aware of the '*' key having this behavior, but "Shift+Right" is
supposed to expand subtrees.  My observations on that:

The first time you "Shift+Right", only the top-level tree is expanded; however,
the second time you do it, all subtrees are expanded.

Now, if you "Shift+Left" on a tree, it is collapsed, but subtrees are not. 
That's not documented anywhere so maybe that behavior isn't implemented or
well-defined, but it seems to me that "Shift+Left" ought to work counter to
"Shift+Right", collapsing all subtrees, just like "Shift+Right" expands all
subtrees.
