I assume this is the result of fixing Bug 3725 / r44498, but I'm not sure if
that's a good or bad thing.  Was g_malloc() just less picky about the amount of
memory to allocate?  Was it "more okay" to use g_malloc since it was quickly
g_free()ed again?
