Try not to crash if we don't have a link type
While I have not been able to hit the originally mentioned assertion in my
testing, I have hit several other related ones. This patch fixes all of those,
and likely fixes the cause of this bug as well.
Ihor, Levon, please test with this patch applied (against trunk) and verify
that it does fix the issue. If it doesn't fix the problem, I'll post an
additional patch to provide some more debug output, as I seem unable to
reproduce it on my machine.
Whoever reviews it, it's probably worth checking in even if it doesn't catch
the precise case from this bug, as the other cases it catches are bugs in their
own right.
