It would be useful to allow data to be saved in formats that don't support
comments (or other such features).

I'm not sure what the right UI for that would be, however.

In OS X's TextEdit text editor, I created a document with some plain and some
boldface text; "Save As" didn't support plain text.  I *could* select a
"Convert to Text" item from the Format menu; doing so warned me that font
information, embedded images, etc. would be lost, and offered me the
opportunity to cancel the operation.  Once I did that, the document could only
be saved as plain text, with a choice of text encodings.

I'll have to try some other applications to see what they offer.
