The code to skip white space when parsing requests and responses was not
stopping at the end of the line, which could cause problems if the line ends
with white space. That might or might not be the problem here - I can't
reproduce the putative infinite loop on my machine - but the change needs to be
made anyway.
Checks added in rev 42040.
