It does make sense to be optionally configurable. I had planned on adding that
option after the patch was accepted since this patch is holding up several
other bits of work in this area.
For what it's worth the slow down isn't terrible. I measured the difference in
load times to be approximately 12% longer with CRC checking vs. without. (35
seconds vs. 40 seconds on a 1GB file).
