By "select and/or highlight packet bytes" I assume you're referring to bytes in
the hex/text dump pane; is that correct?

Currently, that pane is implemented as a simple-minded text widget, so you can
select raw text, but not particular bytes. There are a number of reasons not
to implement it as a simple-minded text widget, including making it take a
*lot* less work to set up for a very large chunk of data; another consequence
might be that selecting could involve selecting bytes rather than text, and
could even cause the corresponding fields in the packet detail pane to be
highlighted, i.e. showing to which fields those bytes correspond.

It might make it a bit more difficult to cut the raw text display and paste it
into another window, but it might make it *easier* to cut a sequence of bytes
and paste it either as a hex dump or as raw bytes.
