A little update ...
I noticed in the release notes[1] for c-ares 1.7.5, released on 16-AUG-2011,
the following: "IPv6-on-windows: find DNS servers correctly". So, perhaps the
motivation to switch from c-ares to something else such as libunbound, as
mentioned in comment 3, is no longer justified? Well, once c-ares is updated
from 1.7.1[2][3] to 1.7.5 that is.
