Currently the "Exec" line in the wireshark.desktop file contains only the value
'wireshark'. This means that it doesn't show up under the list of applications
available to open files in Ubuntu 11.10 (inherited from Gnome 3 I believe).

According to the FreeDesktop.org spec [1], the field should contain "wireshark
%f" (or maybe %F or %u?) to indicate that it accepts filenames as parameters.
