We should perhaps have the routine that registers fields return a Boolean
"success/failure" indication along with an error message, so, for example, it
could pop up a dialog box indicating the error. (It *is* an error to register
a field with a blank in the abbreviation, obviously, as that's a bit difficult
to enter into a filter expression, given that blanks are separators in filter
expressions....)
