Hi Jim, I guess it's pretty much agreed that the "eye candy" shouldn't be
enabled all the time but that there will be some preference that
enables/disables it, so regarding the preference ... I guess we have two
primary choices to pick from. Either:
1) Use the gtk-button-images gtkrc preference as Jaap initially suggested.
Doing this means that this feature is tied to the rest of the button images,
which may or may not be desirable (leaving aside my own preference, which
ultimately doesn't really matter much). If we do this, then I think it
wouldn't hurt to add something to the user guide about it in section 10 so
folks know how to turn it on/off if they want.
2) Use a Wireshark preference as you've done in your latest patch, and also add
a way for the user to enable/disable it. Jorg has suggested placing it in the
top level user interface page, so if this is done, then a patch for that would
be needed, and at some point the user guide section 10.5 should also be
updated.
In case you are leaning toward #2, then what do you think about making the
preference a little more generic in the event some additional "eye candy" is
ever added elsewhere in the GUI later on? i.e., instead of
prefs.gui_expert_composite_eyecandy, we just have prefs.gui_eyecandy? This way
we don't end up with multiple preferences for decorating different parts of the
GUI.
Since it's your idea/patch Jim, which would you prefer? I don't want to seem
like I'm steering you in some direction you don't want to go. And I'm not a
GUI expert here,; I'm just trying to offer some feedback and help resolve some
of these bugs, nothing more. Thanks.
