Aw, man, and I thought we had found a compiler bug!

I was thinking the same thing: whether it was worth the effort to make those
functions return mallocated memory.  For now it probably makes sense to just
not keep the pointers around (as your first patch does).

But then we can/should also remove the code that follows these comments:

/* Retain the filter text, and fill it in. */

since that condition will never happen.  I'd do it now but I'd rather wait
until I have access to my Win32 system again.
